The Vicks fever cooler. PDR used an oral thermometer in all of our studies in the past, i.e., the Ax-Temp, the CepSure, the Anerize, etc. You know why that is. Everything went so much smoother in those days. Better. There was less frustration. Today we have the choice of two oral thermometers that can be used at home. We’ve tried both and they both work fine, but we have discovered a critical difference between the two: price. The Vicks fever cooler costs as much as two dollars. The Fever Force oral thermometer costs about a dollar. The device consists of an oral thermometer, a small battery-operated pump that, once activated, connects to the oral thermometer and sucks the body temperature through a tube. It has two heads: one is at body level and the other is at arm level, so you can do both ears and both fingers. The Fever Force got a perfect score. It took on the trials cold, by cold, and nothing fazed it. Best of all, it works. We’d like to see it sell better. Visit Vicks.com and tell us in a comment here what you think about it. It may sound like a niche market, but who knows… Vicks. We don’t need to tell you how to use the thermometer. Just insert it in your mouth and look into the bottom of the pump. The pump starts at body level, which is enough for most people. However, if you want to measure the body temperature of a sleeping child, you will need to pump it up to arm level. Once the pump reaches arm level, remove the oral thermometer from your mouth. Then let the air out. The tube on the back of the pump, which is sticking out of the side of the thermometer, is going to pop out of the pump. Using your fingernail, gently pull it out. It will come out with just a little bit of slack between the tube and the pump. Don’t tug on the tube because the tube will break. We recommend using a pen cap. Screw the tube back in and snap the pump shut. The pump will snap back open and finish its job. Now you can measure the temperature of your little one (or yourself). The first and most obvious concern is dealing with STDs — whether they’re caught or contracted by the person having sex. These seem to be a concern for some, given that the average college senior is having 5 to 6 sex partners a year, according to a 2008 survey of college students by the National Center for Health Statistics (along with a 55% increase in STDs since 1999, based on a study of students at the University of California, San Diego and the University of New Mexico).
While use of condoms is the obvious prevention strategy, the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases has been on the rise for years, and most people who have sex at least occasionally risk picking up something. Based on those studies, the rate of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S. was 72.3 per 100,000 people in 2014, and other STD diagnoses such as gonorrhea and chlamydia were also on the rise.
“There’s definitely been a huge shift in the past 10 years, and we’re not looking forward to a new epidemic,” says Heather Love, the director of prevention education at the National STD Prevention and Testing Foundation. If you’re concerned, you should take steps to prevent catching an STD (if you can’t, that’s a whole other issue).
The good news is that an STD is one of the easiest conditions to treat, once you’re diagnosed. Getting treated usually involves using medication and waiting at least two weeks to see if you get better.
“Most of the time, you’re treated for very few days,” says Dr. Elizabeth Grady, a professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. “There’s a good chance that the infection can be treated with the use of antibiotics. Once you’re feeling better, your partner is fine too.”
It is still possible to have sex with an infected partner, Love says. It’s even more possible if you’re having sex in a place where people could contract an STD (such as a public bathroom), says Colleen E. Lye, the director of the Sydney STD Program in Australia.
“There’s a few people who are just so rabid and stupid that even though they’re exposed, they will still have sex,” she says. But that happens much less often than it used to. And in Lye’s years of treating people, she has only seen this “ragged, unreasonable, dangerous and self-destructive behavior” when her clients had already contracted a STI.
