As the “divoracin memoirs” turn to religion, the number of sources used for quotation increases. Unamuno also begins to cite canonized authors and to introduce the importance of their teaching. Paul might have been the first source cited, the passage being the only one in Paul’s text from the Imitation of Christ with which don Miguel is familiar. His quotation of a letter by the Bishop of Dolores, written to a friend and fellow Spaniard, shows his fondness for the Virgil of Roman Catholic orthodoxy. St. Jerome is mentioned, as is St. Francis, while St. Augustine, whose works are not specifically named, is alluded to as the model for the saintly Urdisco. Don Miguel also draws from the ancient Greek and Roman rhetoricians: Lysias, Aristotle, Theophrastus, Isocrates, Cicero and Quintilian.

One person whom don Miguel discusses at length is Lilla Cabot Perry. Don Miguel’s personal enthusiasm for Lilla, as he refers to her throughout the diary, is clearly evident. Perry had already had her conversion in England, and had become a fervent Roman Catholic while in America. In 1874 she had met Bishop Potter at the Catholic-Episcopal seminary at Oscoda, Mich., and in 1875 had come to Spain to teach at the Jesuit San Ignacin College, Valencia. In May 1877 she had met don Miguel in Madrid, and had left Spain in July 1878, hoping to visit the United States. In 1883 she returned to Spain, but was met at the railway station by don Miguel, and together they went to visit Unamuno. Lilla, the everwilling reader, was to be their teacher. In the opening of Cmo se hace una novela, she is referred to as don Miguel’s only reader, and in the second entry, the passage is continued: this is don Miguel and I. He does not know anything, and so he reads. She is capable of giving him his first taste of philosophy, something that is to be kept for a later day. (823) The work of reading, therefore, is dangerous, for the personal taste of the reader could be corrupted. The text is not to be read except by himself alone.

This interpretation reveals the character of Cmo se hace una novela as a historical novel. The book contains five chapters, each made up of two or three sections, in which the historical figure of Don Miguel de Unamuno is played out in the form of a fictional character. Chapters two and three are made up of the first and second chapters of Cmo se hace una novela, while the second chapter of Cmo se hace una novela is contained in chapters one, three, and four. The first chapter of Cmo se hace una novela is the first section of chapter two, and the third is the first section of chapter three. What does this mean? The book functions like a historical novel in that the various characters appear within the novel as historical figures in their own right. The first chapter of Cmo se hace una novela describes the birth of Spanish liberalism; chapters two and three relate Unamuno’s efforts to negotiate between the two liberal factions, the Liberals and Moderados; the second chapter of Cmo se hace una novela is about Don Miguel’s final decision in favour of Moderadoism; and chapters one, three, and four are about his final acceptance of the Moderados and his return to Spain.
