Creating new images

Photoshop works with layers, so it’s worth familiarizing yourself with their benefits. These layers are just like the paintings in a child’s picture book: They contain their own sets of colors and shapes, which can be moved, hidden, or copied and pasted onto each other.

When you create a new document, you are working with a plain white background. Figure 3-9 shows the blank document I started with.

The first thing you need to do to create an image is to add a photo or type your text. Then you need to add one or more layers. I added two layers in this example, just so you can see them.

In this case, I’ve added some photos that I downloaded from my camera. After you add one or more layers, you start adding graphics, effects, filters, and other items, until you have the image you want.
