Organizing Your Work

The basic structure of a Photoshop file involves five layers, as shown in Figure 7-1. Each layer is named and stored as a separate file, which enables you to edit multiple photos and save only the edits you want at the end.

You can choose to create your own layout for your Photoshop file, or you can use default layers provided with your Photoshop images. All the photos in Figure 7-1 were created in the same template with default Photoshop layers. However, you may have downloaded your images from the Internet, so they may not have layer layouts.

You can change the number of layers that are stored in the default templates, but doing so may cause unexpected results as you continue editing your images. On the other hand, new layers can be added during the process of image editing, which is very helpful for making your image look exactly the way you want it.

You can create more than one Photoshop document by setting up and naming the files, but you can only open one image for editing at a time. Therefore, you can use Photoshop in multiple-image projects to create a photo layout with layers and save only the final image in a different file. (See the upcoming section on editing multiple photos and saving single file versions.)

Getting to know your Layers palette

When you create a Photoshop file from scratch, you see a Layers palette that looks like Figure 7-2. (Note that the left panel in Figure 7-2 is displayed slightly cut off for emphasis.)

You can create a new Photoshop document from this Layers palette by choosing New from the Photo menu and selecting Photoshop Document. I recommend that you set up a set of layers for your image before you start editing it because the default Photoshop file has only one set of layers. (See the next section for help setting up layers.)

You can tell the number of layers in your document by looking at the Layers panel. The top layer is always displayed on top, and all other layers are shown below the top layer, as shown in Figure 7-2.
