AutoCAD’s GUI is configurable through its VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) and Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (MVBA). For example, to change the text color of a particular tool, one would select it, then in the context menu, change the color to green. To set the color of every tool, one would select all the tools, then in the context menu, change the color to green. VBA may be used to automate such tasks.

Other languages

AutoCAD supports use of other languages and frameworks to program parts of its software. AutoCAD 2016 is capable of using the.NET framework to generate.NET assemblies to run applications, and it supports the AutoLISP programming language. AutoLISP, or AutoLISP for AutoCAD, was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) in 1992 by Doug Lohse, Tom Brossman, and Carl Sassenrath to incorporate the programming language LISP into the AutoCAD application. LISP has been used in AutoCAD for many years and continues to be one of the preferred languages for AutoCAD scripting, but for most recent releases it is no longer supported.

AutoCAD also supports the VBA programming language from Microsoft, originally developed as a programming environment for Excel. VBA and AutoLISP are in turn built on the ObjectARX framework.

In addition, AutoCAD supports the ObjectARX framework, which allows use of C++ to automate certain aspects of AutoCAD. AutoCAD’s DXF file format, used for exporting 3D data, allows for importing and exporting such data using a multitude of applications, including the external OASIS Application Programming Interface (API). Using the API, external applications can be used to automate AutoCAD functions.

Open a model
