History

AutoCAD was first released as a desktop application running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. It was available for the Apple II, the IBM PC/XT, IBM PC/AT, and the IBM PC/AT clone the TRS-80 Model 100.[1] Prior to the introduction of AutoCAD, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal.[2] In September 1982, Autodesk introduced the first 32-bit version of AutoCAD for the Apple II with the application code named “SCRIPTER”. SCRIPTER could output a wide variety of formats including plotters, plotters with tables, plotters with tape, plotters with plotters, plotters with printers, plotters with other plotters, plotters with plotter tables, plotters with minidisk, plotters with host printers, and plotters with host printers and tables. How to deal with volatile data which is updated in a thread

I’m working on an embedded system with a multi-threading architecture. Some data must be synchronized (for the example, a shared flag).
I was under the impression that, when calling a critical section, I could simply put a synchronizing volatile variable in the code and update it to the critical section.
When the code reaches the critical section, the thread will correctly read the last updated value of the variable.
However, as I’m not 100% sure that the thread is the only one to update that variable, I added a synchronized block (which I always include in the code) just before the critical section, so that other threads may or may not update that variable.
I tested my code on several platforms (ARM, x86,…) and always got the correct behavior: with my synchronized block, the only thread that is allowed to enter the critical section is the thread that updated the variable.
However, a few days ago, I added the same code to another platform (which also had a similar architecture). Suddenly, without any modification, the code is not behaving as I expected anymore.
To my mind, if I have a synchronized block, it is equivalent to always lock the variable, except in rare cases (when a thread is already inside the critical section and updates the variable). However, as this has always been working fine for many platforms, I cannot understand why it started to break.
So I’m wondering if I missed something, and if there is some specific behavior about volatile data that I don’t know.
