AutoCAD History [ edit ]

The basic user interface of AutoCAD began as an enhanced version of a 1980s-era word processing program, AutoLisp,[2] which in turn was a rewrite of an earlier version of AutoCAD by the same company, and a tool for drafting and plotting geographic data and graphs.

It has been reported that Autodesk has taken several licenses to Microsoft’s ActiveX controls from MSX.[3] AutoCAD has many drawing layers such as Sketch and B-layer. AutoCAD has functions like recursion or dimensioning. The compatibility with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook make it suitable for workflow in business processes. AutoCAD can work with other programs that are not 3D, such as Microsoft Visio.

AutoCAD has come a long way, from a small program that could only handle orthogonal engineering drawings, to its current version, a full-featured 3D software application that could also handle architectural drawings.[4]

Software and Hardware [ edit ]

AutoCAD is available in desktop, mobile, and web versions. The desktop version is installed on your computer hardware.

The web version of AutoCAD is in a.NET application based on JavaScript, Silverlight, or Adobe Flash. The web version has the ability to be used on mobile devices or desktop computers via browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or Opera. In addition to web-based versions of the application, there are several options to download and install AutoCAD on Windows 7 (Win 7) (64-bit) (x86), Windows 8 (Win 8) (x86 and x64), Windows Server 2008 (x86 and x64), Windows Server 2008 R2 (x86 and x64) and Windows 10 (x86 and x64). There are also windows tablet applications available for tablets such as the Surface RT, Surface 2, Surface Pro and Surface 3. There are also variations of AutoCAD available as part of the PC-only software suite, AutoCAD 360.[5]

AutoCAD Workflows [ edit ]

In AutoCAD 2009, native C++ ObjectARX enhancements were removed for licensing reasons, and the legacy C++ COM-based version is being phased out of AutoCAD.

AutoCAD Architecture

AutoCAD Architecture is a special user interface developed in AutoCAD that supports architecture, engineering, and interior design. Architectural content includes AutoCAD MEP, AutoCAD Infrastructure, AutoCAD Raster, AutoCAD Surface, AutoCAD Structural Analysis, AutoCAD Project Management, and AutoCAD RMP.

AutoCAD MEP

AutoCAD MEP, originally named AutoCAD Mechanical, is a model-based design tool for mechanical engineering. It provides the means to model assemblies, frames, and sub-assemblies, and includes specialized commands and tools to create and manage mechanical assemblies, as well as utility programs such as assembly gantries and detail definitions.

AutoCAD MEP is a natively integrated product, although it can be used as a stand-alone program. It includes a large number of feature enhancements since its predecessor, AutoCAD Mechanical. Features include:
