History and design

AutoCAD was created by Steve Bass and Aaron Goldman of Grass Valley in 1982 as a replacement for the built-in 2D drafting program in the Lotus 123 personal computer operating system.

AutoCAD was introduced with the release of the Apple Macintosh 128K computer in 1984. With the launch of the Windows 3.1 operating system in 1990, Autodesk ported AutoCAD to that platform, as did rival CAD companies, including International Paper and SolidWorks.

The first commercially available desktop app that combined word processing, spreadsheet, and graphic functions on the same platform as AutoCAD was Quattro Pro for the Atari ST in 1988.

AutoCAD was later ported to many other platforms, including DOS and Windows 3.x, OS/2, Unix, Macintosh, Amiga, and IBM OS/2.

In 1995, when Microsoft released Windows 95, AutoCAD was one of the first software titles to be ported to the operating system.

On May 30, 2018, a partnership between Autodesk and Tencent to create a cloud version of AutoCAD was announced.

In May 2019, Autodesk added ObjectARX as a free companion product for AutoCAD software.

In January 2020, Autodesk introduced the AutoCAD Architecture Suite, a set of related CAD products for the construction industry. The suite includes AutoCAD MEP, and ACDSee Architectural, along with other related products.

Function

AutoCAD is a commercial CAD application, designed to assist architects, industrial designers, and civil and mechanical engineers in creating and editing 2D and 3D drawings. As such, it has a number of features that are not found in other commercial CAD packages, such as a built-in AutoLISP interpreter, parametric design functionality, boolean solid-modeling capabilities, and the ability to edit and view isometric drawings.

AutoCAD also supports a wide range of other standard design software, such as DWG, DXF, and PDF. The application is capable of viewing and editing many file formats.

The application is available in both a Windows or Macintosh version.

AutoCAD offers block storage for viewing drawings. Autodesk has released an application named “Essential C” for the purpose. To move blocks in a drawing, the C tool is used.

Graphics tool architecture
AutoCAD tool architecture, has evolved to a higher level of abstraction with tools such as the new Linetypes, the Data Management Language, View Manager and the AutoSnap to name but a few.

Web publishing
AutoCAD provides a Web server interface that can be used to publish and download drawings. AutoCAD delivers a web-based application in a browser, complete with a command line for batch processing, via its Query Designer command, and supports publish and download of drawings as web pages. AutoCAD can send and receive e-mail messages with a web server or any e-mail client. This functionality is called e-mail interchange. AutoCAD is also available as a web application to be accessed over the Internet.

Drawing exchange (DXF)
AutoCAD DXF allows exchanging drawings between programs.

AutoCAD supports vector graphics formats such as DXF, DWG, PDF, SVG, and even GIF for non-image graphics. AutoCAD supports most of the common export formats for CAD data, such as the International Standard ISO 13606 for CAD data. AutoCAD allows PDF annotations, searchable drawing information, and other features.

Out of the box, AutoCAD displays a CAD background but has an Application Program Interface (API) that can be used by other programs to display a similar graphical background, such as the HTML 4.0 specification. It is also possible to display another background via software installed on the computer.

Go to the preferences>authorizations window
Right click on the xml file and check the autocad authorization

How it works

If you do not see the authorization window, open the autocad main window and go to “Preference Settings” > “Authorizations” > “Security”.
Select “Client Credentials” under “Type”
Select “Auth. xml” from the list
Click on the “Authorize” button.
You will be asked to save the XML file, click on “save”.
Save the xml file under the location: “c:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD 2018\Authorizations”
