AutoCAD was first introduced in 1982 by Autodesk as a new type of computer-aided drafting (CAD) program for desktop computers running on an internal graphics controller.

Originally called CATIA, the program used a microcomputer with an internal graphics board that was not connected to a separate monitor. AutoCAD was one of the first commercial CAD programs to use a computer monitor as the primary tool for displaying graphics. The first release of AutoCAD was 1.0 in December 1982.

In 1988 Autodesk began the migration of AutoCAD from the microcomputers to its first IBM compatible personal computer, the IBM AT and Apple Macintosh computers. At the same time AutoCAD was designed to function with Microsoft Windows and OS/2 operating systems. AutoCAD 1.5 was the first release to run under Windows.

Starting in the 1990s, Autodesk released major upgrades of AutoCAD in 1.x, 2.x and 3.x series. The 2.x and 3.x series were based on a new 3D engine that allowed the user to manipulate 3D objects and display 3D views. During the 3.x series the user interface was also changed to have a new look. The 3.x series also saw the release of many new features, such as Parametric Design and Revit.
