History and Specifications

AutoCAD is available as a stand-alone application (AutoCAD LT) or as part of an integrated suite (AutoCAD Professional), a mobile application, and other products. A common misconception is that the name AutoCAD refers to the product that debuted in 1982. In fact, AutoCAD was initially released in 1982 as a “Drafting” application that only provided the capabilities to create simple drawings.

The first version of AutoCAD was the “Autodesk AutoCAD Drafting and Design Software” (1982) released on Apple II, Atari, and IBM PC compatible computers.
