championship manager 4 revolutionised the way football was played, and its style is the way it is here. everything is at your fingertips, and it’s almost impossible not to get caught up in the flow of the game. the days of playing a match and then pausing before making your substitution, a move you know will improve the balance of the side, have gone for good. the rotary timer, which was a bit iffy, has been dispensed with in favour of a totally unique 2d match engine, which is a huge step forward for the series. you can even start a match at any time and the game will carry on. there is no pause button. the only real issue i have with the game, and im sure most people will agree with this, is that the style of match feels more like a game of table tennis than football. the matches are far too slow and the ball drifts and moves very little. if the idea of controlling your team from a 2d interface is a bit of a shock, the look of the game itself is even more so. the game is an absolute hodgepodge of ideas, which all appear to have been thrown together for the sake of it. the formations are all of the most basic, and there are no real substitutions, and the game is still a long way from being ready for the new management game, football manager 2005. you can switch between tactics, but there are no real options. in fm2005 you can even play in a game of 20-a-side if you want, but im not sure what a championship manager has to do with 20-a-side.
the in-game commentary is fairly good, particularly if you like the sound of robbie earle’s voice, but unfortunately, the pace of the game makes it less than the full experience, and it is less than the full experience. the game is a little too slow, and as a result, it is very easy to lose interest at the wrong time. once the game is restarted, it is very easy to get lost in the match, and even though the story moves along, it does so at a sluggish pace. i’ve always been a big fan of championship manager, but the new engine really lets down what was an excellent game.
