The impact of the media on public opinion has become a lively area of research and controversy. This chapter addresses the question of the extent to which politicians and the media influence public opinion via control over the news media, and the extent to which that influence is benevolent, self-serving or partisan.

Normative approaches are concerned with what is good or bad, proper or improper, desirable or undesirable, appropriate or inappropriate. In other words, normative approaches seek to evaluate behavior for its rationality, morality, etc. Normative approaches to political psychology usually look at the attitudes, beliefs, attitudes, thinking, motives, information processing, behaviors, knowledge and political skills that lead to political behavior, influence political behavior, and shape political systems.[37] Examples of normative approaches include: social dominance theory, rational choice theory, electoral behaviour theory, social exchange theory and structuration theory.

According to Dahl (1985), political behavior, while psychologically complex, is actually relatively simple. He hypothesized that, when given a sufficient motivation, people will follow certain rules in order to reach a goal, building from two principles: efficiency and democracy.
