Of all the tales of adventure in the world, perhaps the most magnificent is the tale of heroes and monsters, of courage, sacrifice and glory. And as a history buff, I was always looking forward to delving into that story, to explore the history of the times, and to discover new characters and their stories of triumph, tragedy and courage.
Unfortunately, many developers felt the same way. But in the middle of the 13th century, as the world was getting an identity crisis, there was an event that finally fulfilled everyone’s wishes, putting the story of heroes and monsters front and center. A great army, led by a noble who rose from the ashes of a tragedy and became the very first king of Sweden, crushed the enemies of the country and embarked on a long and glorious path of conquest. Alongside the joy of history, we also love legends and myths – and this is why we decided to make the history of 12th century Sweden not only interesting, but also immersive, almost three-dimensional.
The game is the first part of the trilogy, The Legends of Sweden, where our heroes will travel to the north of Sweden to the ancient Nordic territories, which have been inhabited by humans for centuries. In a world where enemies are constantly appearing, and the hazards are savage and dangerous, we will complete our quest and come back home with a trophy.
About the Game Playable characters:
Our hero is a simple peasant, who, together with his friend Bo Svensson and his family, is struggling for survival against all odds. However, his life will never be the same.
Along the way, our hero will meet many new friends, such as the colorful and loving Gerhard, the courageous Bo Svensson, and the soulful Grace, a Nordic maid who will join the journey together with our hero.
You will have to save the Northlands from invaders, while overcoming impossible odds and facing your most dangerous enemies, to take back what is rightfully yours. You will have to complete the quests set by the King as well as numerous other quests, solve puzzles and meet a myriad of characters along the way. When the journey is over, you can go home with your trophy and share the experience with your friends.

STRENGTH AND AGILITY
As you gain levels in the game, your own special attributes will develop as well.
Strength is your ability to get the best out of your car, and build your damage, speed and jump power.

Some years ago a guy named Evan once made a graphics library called SDL_gfx. I’ve always had a thing for making games in C++, so this immediately appealed to me, and I’ve been using it in a variety of different projects ever since. Recently, I wrote a very simple 2D game engine called DarKnot that has been updated to use SDL_gfx rather than SDL_ttf for pretty much all of it’s drawing. I’ve decided to release this under an open source license and put the project online. If you have any interest in making games in C++ then I think you’ll find this library quite useful. There are of course some issues with the engine, but they aren’t anything serious. I’d love to hear what you think of the project and what you want to see me do in the future.

I was very ambitious when writing this and had intended on making a single statically linked executable that could run everywhere. I’m now realizing that this is likely a lot of work and maybe a bit daunting, so I’ve elected to focus on making a platform-agnostic library. This means that the code will need to be linked into any library, but it should be a fairly simple matter to do so. You can read more about my reasoning here. If you want to actually run the game you need a toolchain that has been built with the SDL_gfx library. I have written a script that will do this for you. You can use it to build and run the game. The core of the game’s code is in src/dar.cpp and src/darlib.h

The engine is designed to be “multi-threaded” in the sense that if you are using SDL_gfx then you can easily queue drawing operations to the hardware as they come in. However, if you are running an older version of SDL then you need to manually queue them yourself in order to get the performance you’d expect. The engine doesn’t really do anything to force this “automation” of queuing, but if you want to be totally safe you might need to manually start and stop your threads yourself. This may be a bit of a hassle, and I’m definitely planning to improve this. You can read more about how it works here.
