Apple announced a new Macbook on Tuesday, but fanboys and fangirls might have more to look forward to than just a new computer. The company also revealed a new keyboard and touchpad configuration that would help users to time-shift the type of work they do.

Some of the biggest problems I found in the internal Photoshop Help system seem to be a result of the conversion to an online grid rather than an offline resource. This grid is still primitive in several ways. The Help book is in PDF format. That makes it a little cumbersome to navigate, and much less convenient to search. (How do you search for a term in a document that’s going to take an hour to read?) The grid is attached to a “Help” menu, but it’s not buttoned up to the top level of the menu system. Rather, it seems that the online Help system was attached to Photoshop when it wasn’t ready, and the online Help was gradually attached to menus and buttons that weren’t meant for it. So, the Help menu was initially named “Photoshop,” rather than Photoshop. The Help menus themselves are still prefixed with “Photoshop (Photoshop),” not “Photoshop CS6.” An indented table isn’t a very effective help mechanism. That doesn’t mean that “Photoshop (Photoshop)” is inferior to “Photoshop (Photoshop CS6),” but you would think that the current name of the tool would be more useful for helping users.

If you want to go in and manually adjust the brightness you will also find that it will be very uncomfortable.

Adjust Shadows/Highlights – some images look blurred and a little dark in the shadows. This is a great fix and can be done fast if you click the auto button. You can also adjust the shadows and highlights up or down with a brush.

Add a Layer – you can add another layer on top of your image and add a different color on top of your image. You can also use a variety of ways to combine layers to make your image look special.

Photoshop can now be used to create a variety of effects. The settings can be many varied and some need to be used over and over to achieve a desired effect. This can be extremely time consuming when learning Photoshop. It is recommended that you start a new document and then adjust the settings and try them on a picture or two until you are comfortable with the adjustment and then continue using that effect to make different pictures.

In particular, the future of the 3D UI is in flux. In an effort to make the best of both worlds, much work has been put into the design and implementation of core 3D editing as well as the 3D UI window. That means that the 3D UI window still has native 2D features such as the ruler (no zoom-in or out) to edit geometric properties and capabilities to work natively with 2D layers. In addition, care has been taken to fix many longstanding issues such as snapping to edge guides and layers. While the future of Photoshop’s native 3D workflows is still uncertain, the result is a new native 3D UI window combined with a decent starting base to build and iterate upon for use cases and architectural problems. The result is a more fluid use of 3D tools that is stable and focused on the long term, not on being current.

In the meantime, it’s not too early to plan for what comes next. In the next major release of Photoshop, the new UI window will get the Effect Panel and Layers Panel from the Legacy designs for direct access to 3D and 2D respectively. Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 will still support the legacy design and workflows for editing in 3D. This will include the 3D UI window in all software updates until the transition to the native GPU APIs that will begin with CC 2019.
