  E-RING is a fantasy RPG that breaks away from the main body of the fantasy RPG genre and emphasizes the customization of the player’s character in a more liberal way, as it satisfies both the tastes of those who want to play a fantasy RPG without breaking away from the familiar genre and the tastes of those who want to enjoy the deep customization of the game.

  What’s new in Elden Ring:

  
  First of all, the idea being given to the vanilla OSI was to build something that would address the various timeless “core” gaming styles: turn-based, grid, isometric.

  So essentially, the little justification I did, is that the idea was to make a game whose grid would allow a player to choose a perspective, which would place him at the heart of an RPG adventure: the turn-based phase, where you’re supposed to attack enemies, just like in a traditional video game.

  While this game is built on top of RPGMaker — following in the tradition of the RPG games coming from the LittleBigPlanet world — the suite of this game is made of about 60 modules, bound together, and on top of a framework which allows different styles to work. It’s a custom-made set of modules which joined together allow only a limited number of actions to be taken.

  Because having 60+ modules enabled within this goal already requires a lot of time, there wasn’t enough to devote to its polish. Another risk we were probably taking when we embarked on this, was that this form of “flexible design” would allow things to be accelerated along, and the overall risk of internal criticism would be higher.

  As a result, this version is much more rough than the alpha we finally released, but it already managed to drive fast enough to give us some feedback, on some critical issues, and has raised the expectations we may have had for this.

  Getting to the turn-based side of things, the first point is that your starting army is too simple.

  A conventional video game would have a starting party with a selection of characters (kill9/thespades), which the player would create and fill his or her party with. Here, the difficulty in creating a turn-based RPG is that we have only one character, so we can’t just add some models from the nrrd2 library.

  This game is a free-to-play game: making it worth playing for a lot of players means more potential revenue. To do that, we opted for a very powerful base class.

  The character you start with is also a generic attacker — so it means you always start with a situation where the enemy can target you. This class is focused on a character with a mix of speed, strength and defense.
