Democrats more optimistic than Republicans and independents

Fewer Americans expect the economy to get better than six months from now

PRINCETON, N.J. — Ahead of November’s presidential election, 71% of Americans say the economy is likely to improve over the next year. This is the highest level of optimism among Americans since 2009, but it’s still lower than the proportion saying that in September 2012, when the nation was in the throes of a disastrous economic downturn that had been building for more than a year. Today’s result is also only slightly higher than the 66% who thought the economy would improve one year ago.

These numbers follow a summer of rising optimism, just as Americans were expecting the economy to be worse than it had been in the past. What accounts for the increase?

The explanation lies in the impact of the election itself. It may be that simply the prospect of change makes people feel better, or that as “change” becomes a more realistic goal after a divisive election, hope returns. Regardless, the fact that greater optimism has returned to the economy is good news for the country going into the next year.

The stories Americans are telling each other about the economy may also be a factor. For example, more people now say they are better off financially than a year ago. Furthermore, the share of Americans who describe their financial situations as “poor” or “not at all well off” is the lowest it has been since 1999, and down from 2007 and 2011. Americans’ descriptions of their economic situation have improved over time, so no one is probably much poorer today than they were in 2007, but the improvement suggests the economy has not yet turned the corner.

Political views and expectations about the economy are closely tied. For example, more Democrats than Republicans and independents expect the economy to improve over the next year, and independents’ optimism is more negative than that of Republicans and Democrats. Democrats also have a more positive view of their personal financial situation than do Republicans or independents, which tracks with recent history.

The public’s current views of the country’s direction might also play a role. Fifty-nine percent of Americans today believe the country is on the wrong track, a number that is
