the true crown jewel of the chainsaw massacre series, and perhaps the most expensive, infamous and gory exploitation film of all time, the texas chainsaw massacre 3: the next generation has become a cult classic in its own right, although for some strange reason, the sequels (yes, there are three of them) have failed to be accepted by the mainstream. but the texas chainsaw massacre 3: the next generation is a movie that deserves more respect, because the genre is tough, because its a very crafty imitator of a very popular movie, and because its the story of a group of people trapped in a cabin by a madman. its also a fairly self-aware film, a fact which makes it one of the more charming of its ilk, playing with the conventions of the slasher genre and offering its own brand of laughs along the way. it was also the first time that the film basically opens with an introduction to the characters, rather than a prologue, which became an increasingly prevalent (and popular) storytelling technique over the course of the 1980s. it also has some exciting visual and sound design, courtesy of director/co-writer andrew howard. its a shame that more people dont know about this little gem. jim vorel

dario argento always struggled to make money from his films, something that caused him to sell off his rights to many of his projects and only launch it after he was happy with the final product. when he finally did attempt a sequel to his groundbreaking deep red, it ended up being regarded as the worst in the series.

this is how you do a big budget horror movie. you dont really do a big budget horror movie. but this is what happens when you do a big budget horror movie. as we are well aware, halloween 2 is a turkey amongst the halloween canon. it has one of the strangest openings you will ever see, the inexplicably bad sequel to a film which has arguably the most iconic opening scene of all time. instead of being buried in a closet for a few minutes, michael myers sneaks up on a startled babysitter, strangles her, and then drops a lit match down the front of her shirt. imagine what that would have been like. or imagine what the film would have been like if instead of its eventual killer ending having a chase scene, we had a babysitter being burnt alive, then being stabbed to death. and then, if we were lucky, in the finale, we have theres over 70,000 maniacal clowns running around. its too bad halloween didnt actually fit into this theory. the first film was made as if it were a spiritual sequel to psycho. its not a remake, its a continuation. its about a serial killer with facial scars who targets beautiful young women. the film also opens with a 15-minute haunted house sequence, which is a slasher film in itself, and then turns into the first half of the main film. (and remember, this movie is about an already established character murdering beautiful young women.) then, in the second half, we cut to laurie partners perspective, as she and her friends are checking into a seedy motel, as the film turns into a classic slasher. all of it comes to a head in one night, with michael myers killing everyone. in the end, he faces off against a preacher, who easily kills him. the only hitch? this preacher is a black man, and the main character in the film is a white woman. because of this, a lot of the film ends up being about race. coincidence? you bet. not to mention it shows the sexist and racist attitudes of the film industry of its time. this is why ive always felt halloween 2 is a step backward for the horror genre. the only things that have stayed the same are the music and the opening, but theres no character development, and theres no character interactions. no character really changes their life, except the babysitter does, for some reason. no one learns anything, including michael, as he still does everything the same, but with more knives. its as if everything was frozen in time in between movies.

theres one thing that evil dead (the original) has over the friday the 13th films, and that is that it is a very funny movie, even when it is terrifying. for instance, when we first meet ash (bruce campbell) in the woods, he is not terrified, just disgusted by the pigs that are rooting around and creating a mess. when his friends finally find him, he is, as usual, having trouble accepting their role in saving him. in fact, this is the beginning of the entire series. the film is a comedy about a ragtag group of friends who are stuck in a horrific situation with no way out, but just enough humor to keep you laughing along with them. evil dead (the original) is also the first movie that i remember where bruce campbell became the star of the show. the films evil dead 2 and army of darkness are both great, but the first one still has some of the magic of the original. many sequels get bogged down in being overblown, but not this one. there is always a sense of humor to be found in the evil dead films, which is something that the friday the 13th films always lacked. if you want to watch this movie for its true horror value, you will get a cheap thrill watching ash and his friends try to outrun the zombies, while laughing at their antics, but if you want to have a good time, theres no better place to do it than this.
the 1980’s had a lot of slashers. the term “slasher” wasn’t even a thing yet back then, but these movies came out like monsoon season. the genre has seen a resurgence in the 2000’s with scream and halloween, but there was nothing like the slashers that came out in the 1980’s. in fact, one of the most famous slasher flicks didn’t even come out until the following year. not only was friday the 13th a big hit, but the movie spawned a franchise that would keep coming and coming. the final girl is a film that sticks out in the crowded genre. it’s part horror comedy, part action/adventure, part black comedy, all of which work together to make the whole thing greater than the sum of its parts. and then there’s another factor. it’s almost as if the character of alice makes it all possible. when she first shows up, she’s a loner with a few friends who are all in various stages of dealing with something in their lives, and she’s not even sure what to do, except that she must help all of them. then, she makes a pact with them, and they all end up finding their own paths to escape their problems. its a powerful story, even in a genre that isn’t usually big on such stories. the final girl is also a film that embraces its own parody, with the characters all sporting references to other slashers, and some of the humor, particularly in the first half, is so excessive that it was probably offensive to many people. it’s a film that takes the slasher genre and its tropes and does what no one else had done before. and its also the only film that alice is the main character, and she’s actually the heroine, not the damsel in distress or some pathetic female character.
