the album even says as much in the lyrics on part of long way home: “we are who we are and we like who we like / and we do things our own way.” long way home is the bands third album, their first to be released on the major label, and the last to feature bassist michael clifford, who was instrumental in the band’s success.

“this album is still about the same things that we wrote about in our very first album,” sheppard said. “it’s about standing up for the things you believe in. so yes, there’s a bit of a theme of introspection of what it’s like to be an artist in the world.”

the first inkling of a 90s schoolboy haircut to come is in the songm oh hes back, where three of the band members themselves are comparing themselves to other guys who got rejected in high school. the only obstacle on the road towards becoming popular is to not look too much like the dudes who made everyone think they are too geeky to hang out with.

the name 5 seconds of summer only makes sense once you realize that the guys in the band are all five seconds of various things. 1) lead singer luke hemmings, 2) guitarists calum hood and ashton irwin, 3) bassist michael clifford, and 4) drummer louis bell. combined, this adds up to 6 seconds and worth of connection to different scenarios.

blink-182 drummer travis barker is responsible for the song how could this go wrong, but in return blink never covered the songs blink pointed the 5sos guys towards. the closest they came was a nod in the form of their cover of post office by new politics when they covered the song in 2013.
one of the songs that really got 5 seconds of summer noticed by the world was hey, baby. the chorus line “hey, baby, can you stand the pace?” and is often used to describe when a person is ready to take on another one. the other line is especially important: “and ive got a song that can rock the summer to autumn to winter / so just hurry up, let the sun shine in.” it comes off almost like a plea to the band: “hurry up, we can rock the summer in.”
the line which reminds me of the blink-182 song is in long way home. “now im in a bad place/ and its a long way home,” the guys sing. how did these guys end up in this seemingly impossible situation? at the start of the song, luke hemmings sings: “are we where we wanna be?”, while michael clifford wonders how the “we” can have achieved such a goal. it turns out the “we” are lead singer luke hemmings and guitarist chris sheppard, the two guys responsible for writing the bands songs.
