before the introduction of the revised tune maps in september of 2018, when hp first made their return to the l5p with the new maps, the economy e-series came to market. at that time, hp offered two l5p tunes with the e36, one for towing and a stiffer version for drag racing. im posting their maps below. as you can see, the economy version has an economy map, whereas the race-spec map has a complete suite of assist, speed-related, and idle/boost timing maps. although the economy e-series trucks had no injection pump drama, they did have other issues, such as a sloppy idle, hesitation, and sloppy handing, and hp does offer a tune for them. i do not recommend attempting these modifications without consulting a skilled tuner with experience in the l5p e-series trucks.

even though hp was still running their original maxfirmware ecm tunes for the l5p, it was now possible to tune the trucks economy and race-spec versions separately, and more importantly, to have them all (and i mean all) operate simultaneously when tuned simultaneously. wow! i havent even mentioned half the impact some of the new hp l5p accessories have had on the trucks performance, and those are coming later in this section.

this was all possible because of the new hp tuner. the software aspect was simple, all you needed was a computer (pc or mac) with an active internet connection, a data plan to run the software, and the ability to manage files. the hardware component was a revised ecm chip, but without the modification to bypass the ecm security, you wouldnt have access to the factory tuned maps unless you went through a custom calibrator. in addition to the chips, hp also sent a 3-axis gps, an external device to allow multiple trucks to be tuned at the same time, and a 56k modem. the gps was useful in tuning, especially for resets, but the high cost of the new 56k modem is probably what causes many owners to opt for the 12-month, unlimited talk & text, 1 gb data plan, which includes a 500 mb data usage limit.

to make things more challenging for myself, i havent found a shop willing to perform a crank-relearn and immobilizer reset on my truck. some shops offer them for $100, but i have yet to find one that offers it for free. i found several shops with the ecm modification capability to turn my l5p into an automatic with a stock ecm, but their fees for the service ranged from $190 – $500, and the few shops who offered the skillful service werent offering it at any significant discount.
ive found the closest shop to me is automotive quarter, which just so happens to be owned by the same person who does the programming for the mighty mx, and they used to do the work myself. because i havent tuned the l5p in about a year, theyre pretty well versed in it, so i called them up to find out if they could do the crank-relearn for me.
