History of Making

I’ve worked on a few game prototypes before this project and a lot of it came out of a long (and frankly tedious) search for a new game idea. Having played and enjoyed countless of pokémon games online and having completed the series in the past years, I was very intrigued by the whole concept of pokémon mechanics in a post-apocalyptic setting.

Research and sketching the initial concept was quick and easy, and that’s how Hydroactive came to be a game.

From a mechanic standpoint, I wanted to make a roguelike with some unique twists

nutbolt is your journey through a post apocalyptic wasteland. Your mission is to investigate hazardous areas and to combat threats. In order to reach your destination, you must travel through a series of hazardous areas. The goal of each area is to reach a safe zone, however along the way you will encounter lethal enemies and environmental hazards. Each mission has multiple “variations” based on the locations around you. Every variation comes with its own gameplay style and difficulty.
Each variation requires you to think strategically to successfully complete it. The variation rotation ensures that every mission will offer a slightly different gameplay experience. As an example, discovering a hidden tunnel at the end of a mission allows you to interact with objects in an entirely different way. Using a new tunnel could completely change the next mission. You can access these variations from the main menu before starting any mission.
Explore a hostile environment.
The world of Hydroactive is made of several unique areas, each with its own unique hazards. Every area is procedurally generated, meaning that its basic structure remains the same but the layout of the area is completely different every time the game is played.
Rush to safety.
Sometimes you may choose not to fight your way to safety. Using a seldom encountered variation, the “Rush to Safety” mission allows you to safely travel through an area by using your grappling hook to swing off ledges and strategically land on small patches of ground. The variation shows up when you press [start] whilst in the area you wish to use it on, it isn’t visible in the main menu. You can only use a Rush to Safety variation on a regular mission once.
Use tools to increase your power.
Throughout your journey Nutbolt will collect a wide range of tools that augment his physical abilities and make traveling through the wasteland a whole lot easier. Each tool has its own powerful effects, some even improve your survival ability. For example, if you find a health pack whilst travelling through a risky area, you can pick it up and get some health instantly.
Nutbolt comes with three default tools, but can always receive a fourth tool for free. The default tools are:
Heavily armoured vest which improves your resistance to fire and can be equipped for a variety of offensive and defensive uses.
Pistol – A standard pistol that can be equipped for close range attacks or used to protect yourself if you’re being attacked.
Gun with thermal optics – A rifle that extends

1. Party Members

Nutbolt is a party member and his unique characteristics (Nutbolts Operators stats and abilities) are indicated on the left. With a little practice you should be able to gain the abilities you require and upgrade your stats to make Nutbolt more suited to the situation. You can acquire new abilities through the various story events (including optional ones) or from various powerups. You can purchase more Nutbolts after starting the game if you wish. You can switch between Nutbolts by pressing the active button to cycle through them, their operators will then speak at the top of the screen, giving you information on their current status. You can also switch to other Nutbolts by pausing the game.2. Weapons

Nutbolt is equipped with a specially designed rifle which, while not as powerful as your pistol, has more stopping power and ammo. Other weapons such as the 10mm and explosive ammo found in puzzle boxes and killing machines may be picked up.3. Operators

Niblack is a precision machine made with unorthodox means. He is smart, and can craft pretty much anything. He requires a constant supply of power and parts, which are often hard to come by in the ruined corporate worlds. His weapons and tools are often very specialized and often have no real replacement.

The standard equipment for Nutbolts construction lab is more complicated than it seems. He will be very ill-prepared without the required materials, often having to make improvised creations and scavenge for parts.

Mastery Difficulty: Every time you make an attack, you take a critical hit, the damage is added to your overall damage, causing a spike of vulnerability.

Rival Difficulty: All weapons, armor and energy items have been scrounged and modified. Nutbolt will be missing many pieces of equipment and will be equipped with odd or rare pieces. Weapon quality will also be very low.

Enemy Combat: (Not supported in current version of the game) Random encounters occur at a predictable rate. The rate of enemies in a level will differ from that of the previous level, if enemies of a different difficulty exist. Your attacks are always aimed at the head, and will stun enemies if they are hit. If you manage to attack an enemy’s head, you are at a 50% chance of taking its full health. When an enemy has less
