as a community, index is more than just a place. it is a culture, a way of life that we all share and its the first place ive ever been where i felt this more than anywhere else. ive learned a lot from this place and ive learned a lot about myself. the climbing is solid, the people are amazing, and most importantly, the memories are priceless.

topping out at approximately.4 miles, it can also be done as a first-time 5.12 aid route. a bit of climbing underfoot, a few solid dynos, and multiple pockets to practice resting. this climb is an excellent training opportunity for 5.12 aid climbers, who will find that they can climb this route with considerably more confidence than they can climb the slightly more difficult and much longer big chief. on the hike up you can also see a replica of the colossal cave adventure game, located to the right of the trail. this is a good marker for the start of the upper wall.
now theres the second part of the conversation. this climb is one of the hardest 5.11 cracks ive ever climbed at index. i tried it right after the big chief climb and i found it to be very similar, though the slightly more technical aid chains make for a much more challenging climb. the index t-shirt has it listed as 5.11c, though i consider it 5.11c+, purely due to the difficulty of the aid climbing. where as 5.11c is a definitely a finger crack climb, 5.11c+ is usually referred to as a hand crack climb as well. the difference is that 5.
this is the path that leads to the golden road. as the rocks drip with water, the arboreal canopies are left to filter and hold the mist on its branches for when it reaches the walls, causing the rock to drip even more.
there is an abundance of steep problems of all shapes and sizes on the upper right of the wall. i love this section for several reasons. the first is that it is just pure variety, from overhanging gutters, slabby corners and the massive diamond hand crack, a 5.11d that i was only able to climb a day before taking a fall and injuring my shoulder. the second is that the area feels wonderfully alien; at one time the entire upper ridge would be a tangle of manzanita and maple trees that created a labyrinth of overhanging rock faces, entangling the fingers of anyone who ventured too close. now, those overhanging faces are the only home for the boulders, the trees have been snipped away and the entire area is booming with robust growth.
