Developed for tech savvy users and based on the iText library, iText RUPS (Reading and Updating PDF Syntax) is a Java application that reads PDF documents and lets you explore its structure, including PDF objects and content streams.
You can find out the number of outlines, pages, forms and objects, and examine the file's console. It comes in handy for debugging and testing PDF documents, as well as for performing low-level manipulation.
Java-based utility with a simple UI
As long as you have Java installed on your system, you don't need to set up anything else. The entire application is wrapped in a JAR executable file, which can be placed anywhere on the disk and double-clicked to launch the environment. Worth noting is that, unlike most installers, iText RUPS doesn't make any modifications to your Windows registry.
Analyze the PDF structure and other elements
After dropping a PDF in the main window, the tool puts together its object tree with dictionary information (e.g. creator, creation date, producer), checksum, groups, contents, and other details.
It's possible to navigate pages to learn their specific attributes (e.g. parent, mediabox, resources), as well as to investigate bookmarks, the structure tree, form, XFA, and XRef. If the document contains only plain-formatted text, you can preview it. The stream, XFA and console details are listed on the bottom part of the screen.
Evaluation and conclusion
The tool was light on system resources usage in our tests, and it didn't hang, crash or display error notifications. It definitely has a lot of perks for debuggers and testers. Nevertheless, iText RUPS could have implemented more intuitive options to make it easier to explore, as well as to attract the attention of less experienced users who are curious about such software.

This is an interesting and very relevant question, I had to look for it. It does look promising but there is a few missing features. I know that this is a beta release and this is normal, but maybe there is a future release with these missing features.

1. Quick and easy to use, helping a lot, and thus recommend as well

2. Regarding the modification of a PDF (in the study of a form, for example), as my work is on a heavy thesis and I need to modify a certain form, it is not possible to have even a virtual click as one does in X-Ray. Some customizations are done, depending on the conformation criteria, but I think it is less convenient than the normal modification of a PDF.

While scanning the document i have to go into the “event property”.
Scanning goes well. i scan a page with a document that is more then 500 pages. Next the document shows up as “empty”. i have tried it with other PDF files. The error always come’s up at the same position.

iText RUPS reads and edits PDF documents. It can do things like view and change the structure, navigate pages, edit documents, preview, extract text, find bookmarks, etc.

The download size is about 3.2MB and the installation process is very short, faster than other programs that have a similar feature set.

It will not take you long to realize why it’s a top-notch tool, even if you’re a Windows user.

Hi, I’m an academic who is looking for a program that can automatically extract metadata and other information from the screen shots of my scientific papers. My university’s Academic Technology centre has a free program called Nupad, that is supposed to work for both Mac and Windows, but I haven’t figured out how to use it and don’t know how good it is.
I love these kinds of programs that allow me to see exactly how a manuscript or paper looks before I commit to writing it. Sometimes I’ll go through a paper and notice that I’ve missed a key line. Editing the manuscript is a very laborious task, so having a program like this will be very useful.
But this is the first time I have experience using a standalone PDF reader. I’m hoping that you can help.

Thanks for your feedback. When you say “before I commit to writing it”, we can understand that you’re writing the manuscript on your own machine and not on the server, because only the server sees the final published version of a paper (and the printed paper).

To answer your question, Nupad requires you to upload the PDF file that you want to edit to the Nupad server (which happens to be hosted on academia.edu). Nupad will then extract metadata from the uploaded PDF and create a new PDF file with that metadata. If you’re interested, you can find out more here:
