Most tutors charge like $80/hour (though can vary). This is not the same people as you would see at Kaplan. They charge more than the tutors because they are expected to come into person. In my experience with Kaplan, we would ask for a “virtual tutoring session” where the student would come into the classroom and ask the questions we would use and then the teacher would type it up and email it. This was much more efficient than having to travel to the schools etc. Its similar to the tutors I know at AAMC. Kaplan has a right to make money. If you have lost a job, I am sure you wouldn’t complain if someone was making money off you. Why should Kaplan be any different? They’re not taking any risk. They’re not quitting their jobs to do what they are doing. They have no incentive to do it, nor would they know how to even if they were given the opportunity. They are trying to sell a product to make money. That’s not fair. However, I do feel bad for you because of the amount of debt you have. If I had to live with that amount of debt, I wouldn’t be content either.

I never worked at Kaplan, but that sounds like a lot of wealth and riches. I cant imagine why they wouldnt have the resources to help their employees. They should be hiring more people, not less. Also, the article states it is a profitable company, yet there are only two CEOs.

I really don’t think its an issue of morals so much as simple economics. Kaplan is one of the highest priced companies of any kind out there, but its hard for them to compete with schools, and students in terms of the affordability of their products. So they have to cut their prices to find a way to get by. My step 1 teacher bought her own copies of some of her classes. The ones that she didnt, she watched as many times as she could. You do what you have to.
