thats great, but we would like to offer a specific community of users the freedom to use something we built for free. some people (i am not one of them) may want to use the simatic software or another software in our community and they may want to make some money.

why? if the product is valuable to the community, why should the commercial users of the product get anything? if the community pays for it, the community gets the software. if the community uses it, the community gets to keep all the benefits of that use.

still no. i bought one of the black market hacking team tools that were exposed a few years back, and i found it to be lacking quite a bit in functionality from an interface standpoint. so i went looking around for a better one and found something that was more user friendly. paying double the price for the same product, for free. its a similar story with many other hackerspaces. but theres a difference – its not a matter of price, its an issue of who pays. if the software is released free, who pays for the developer to maintain it, change it, add features, etc? until there is some sort of corporate recognition of an independent hackerspace movement, its going to be hard. i think its hard to do this and do it fairly.
