NNTP is the venerable protocol for Usenet, or mailing list postings. It has been around for over a decade, and is incredibly ubiquitous. More than 20% of all articles sent over the Internet go through Usenet, and it is the preferred method of distribution for around 35% of articles.
The latest version of NNTP was last updated over a year ago. Very few significant new features have been added and the API is severely outdated. It is entirely safe to throw away the 20-odd
years of old NNTP client code from the Netscape and Friends era, and start from scratch using the new methods of the modern web.
Why have there been so few new features? NNTP is the simplest protocol around. There are no complex servers, just clients and servers that expose the common API. Because the protocol has remained relatively unchanged for 20 years, client software that has been around for years has become obsolete and insecure.
NNTP requires special (yEnc) NNTP servers to publish news articles. To get around these problems, NNTP clients have traditionally used the old Linux/BSD/NetBSD
