in the eighties, byrne was a legend. he did record in the past, but it was his kind of music that made him a legend. but then something happened. he lost interest in making an album, and instead began making a show. the show was called stop making sense, and it was, in many ways, the culmination of a lifetime of work. the talking heads had never made a record that was as good as fear of music, as powerful as remain in light, as complex as stop making sense. the group’s members had become more interesting, and their music had become more interesting. the talking heads became a fascinating, twisted, and ultimately quite beautiful band of outsiders. byrne’s strange, ambitious, and, in many ways, muddled new show made them into a legend.

on talking heads remain in light, byrne was in his element. rather than play all the instruments himself, he could get a group of friends to do so. byrne could indulge his desire to create a unique sonic landscape, all the while keeping the pieces in their proper place. he had found a balance between the polished, classically trained arrangements he had learned on remain in light and the caustic, jagged edges that had marked the album that had preceded it. what was particularly exciting about the musical arrangements on talking heads remain in light was that they were all more or less improvised, without a rehearsal. the result was a unique musical experience, combining the sharp edges of remain in light with the luxuriant textures of its predecessor, fear of music.

even if the official soundtrack is a bit dry and it doesn’t include much of the eccentricity that it was known for in the past, there are still a handful of great tracks in it. the hard part is finding the rest of the music, since the album cover is extremely misleading. i am a huge talking heads fan and i bought the album, since i knew the talking heads would be making some reference to that album. after a few hours of playing the disc, however, i discovered that the album cover is a complete misnomer. it is a long album, but it is a mostly instrumental album, with some exceptions.
