chutes is a richly detailed and nuanced album, in part because of its careful construction, but also because of the band members individual contributions to the album. in a complex, but not necessarily uncomplicated, world, the shins offer a welcome and unobtrusive commentary, both for mercer, and for the music of the future.

prior to recording chutes too narrow, the band was already a hit in japan. oh, inverted world went to no. 1 in the country, and the shins found themselves on tour there. having a successful overseas album without the support of a major label also meant the band was able to capitalize on that success without having to deal with a major label. the band took their newly earned freedom and used it to make a more ambitious record that would challenge the expectations of what they were thought to be, rather than what they had actually become. their experimentation with production, instrumentation, and songwriting may be too academic for some, but the band has earned the right to push themselves to the limits of their abilities.

port of morrow, the shins fourth lp, was released on november 30, 2010, preceded by the singles “turn a square” and “caring is creepy.” unlike the days of standing in line to buy chutes, mercer is back at the helm of the band after years of focusing on other projects. and what a change! no doubt due to his recent project broken bells, the record has a much different sound. it’s a mellower, more chilled out affair than the previous release, with more rockabilly-esque influences. on the opener, “caring is creepy,” the sound is reminiscent of a swampy muddy waters blues. these are really nice songs that are very different from the previous record. the band sounds tighter on this record. port of morrow has a very cinematic sound, and the songs have a lot more movement and life to them.

these are quite good songs, and i think it’s the best album the shins have released yet. but the standout is probably “kissing the lipless.” i think it’s the best song mercer has written, and i would’ve given it more than just a half-star if i had to assign one. the song is really great, and the lyrics are really powerful. and it’s the kind of song that i’d hope to hear during a movie, where it gets stuck in your head and reminds you of the movie.
in stark contrast to the brilliance of the first two albums, mercer is clearly feeling less mature and stable here, and it shows in the songs that he’s written, often not much more than an idea. port of morrow is a nice record, but it’s lacking. the songs are somewhat limp and it’s the weakest of the shins albums.
with “chutes too narrow,” mercer truly sounds comfortable in his skin. it’s a beautiful record that finds him at his most confident, and it’s one of the best albums of the last 10 years. and it’s no wonder.
in these songs, mercer expresses the same unhinged anxiety and self-loathing that characterize much indie-rock, and his lyrics are as incisive and pithy as they are at times unbearably bleak (imagine a world in which your life means nothing). yet mercer writes with the same unfettered effervescence as portmans lips, and in chutes too narrow, mercer has created the most compelling and emotionally resonant pop music since the days of “linda” and “pretty pimpin'”.
whether mercer is channeling a manic persona or simply communicating in the most lucid and emotionally lucid style imaginable, chutes too narrow is one of the best albums of the 2000s. it is the kind of album that makes this reviewer think that he shouldnt be allowed to own a home.
