despite the title, the film isnt just about gilda, it is also about the revolution. the political nature of the film couldnt be more evident, but the subject has to be treated with respect, without a political bias, or with a careless attitude. it would have been easy to exploit gilda as a way of saying something against the regime, to make fun of the regime, or to throw a stone against it. but this isnt what the film is about. it has to be a film which means something. its a film about a woman who has to survive, has to find her own way, has to live and has to fight for her freedom. this is what makes this film a political film, while at the same time it isnt a political film, but a film about a woman who struggles to achieve something which isnt easy.
i have always been very attached to the latin world and to the latin culture, and i find the way in which the director corneliu uses his budget, his actors, his editing style, his camera work and his scriptwriting, the way in which he creates his own world in this film, all very latin. i love how the movie has its own visual language, how its visual vocabulary seems to me to be both romanian and latin, and how the setting of the film seems to be in the latin north of italy (gibellina, or not, i dont remember exactly) but still, it has the visual quality of a latin film. i like how the film has its own world which is so perfectly realized. it has a beauty and a quality which belongs to the south of italy, but it also has the quality of a latin film. its like a beautiful woman, she is rich, she is exotic, but still, she has the charm of the south of italy. if you ask me what i think about the film, i would say that it is a beautiful film, that it has character, and that it has the latin quality which i love so much, and which i will always love.
