One of the big differences between NaturalReader 11 and Speechify is that the NaturalReader voices come from leading software houses and are built from the ground up by engineers. There are professional voices in addition to the fun voices. The voices are based on the standards that speech recognition and synthesis algorithms have been around for the past few decades, and have undergone rigorous testing. Speechify’s voices come from a few different sources and most are based on the speech algorithms developed by the Apple speech team that includes Siri, Verbatim (the voice used in Google Now), and the synthesizer in the Mac OS X operating system.

Between the built-in Amazon Free Speech-to-Text engine and the excellent Amazon Polly engine, Natural Reader 11 is an excellent program. I used the free Amazon Polly for the voices on the video above and thought the results were excellent, even with the right and left shift keys. The only problem I had was that the voice changed when I closed and reopened the program.

Natural Reader 11 comes with many voices but there is an additional program that includes many more voices. If you need an incredible range of voices, you should consider the English Voices from Modern Speech. For the price, it is very affordable and includes roughly 4,000 voices, including several for natural readers and synthesizers for any use you can think of.

As with many other tools, the quality of the voices depends a lot on the text files you are using. If you are using Text-to-Speech or Text-to-Speech-Synthesis engines, the voices get better when the text you are working on has fewer words. For example, the Lucy Acapella and Luci Acapella voices get noticeably better with shorter documents. For my videos on Natural Reader 11 I cut out long, complex paragraphs and filled them in with simple filler text.

the new core library has a lot of new features, some of them under-the-hood enhancements and some that will be visible to users. the main ones are: parallel processing (see nrf issue ), including full support for external processors and locally forked processes; more robust handling of special character sets (latin-1, asian, and others); a transparent implementation of line-delimiting behavior for raw text files (re. the nel format); the ability to work with nro files in other languages, including spanish, russian, and chinese;
gone are the days of receiving an email with a new release of a product and expecting a manual perusal in order to check what changes have been made and whether to update or not. i’m happy to announce that instead, i have an automated way of updating all versions of naturalreader as well as the naturalreader web service .
chi is a quite new project (which is so new that i haven’t been able to get a working version yet) that provides the ability to combine naturalreader with many other programs. from a java application, you can just drop a nro file and get ready to read. on the command line, you can use a jython script to either have a pre-prepared nro file or write one yourself. see the chi wiki for more information.
naturalreader is under active development at the jhu library of communications research . this is not a new feature: it has been available since naturalreader 11 for some time now, but for all the software changes that have been going on, i never managed to document it. for this release, i’ve done it, and it is a large set of changes.
